Baby, I was born to run

boosterthon run

So while there is plenty of time left in the school year, we are on the downside so that means lots of fun stuff for us to do at school, e.g., field trip, field day, and the Boosterthon Fun Run. The Boosterthon Fun Run is something I look forward to because I’m not all that great at basketball and and soccer like my other friends so I usually don’t play those with them or at least not when there are a lot of kids playing. But I know I can run. I may not be the fastest, but I can get my Forrest Gump on and run for days.

The Boosterthon Fun Run is where I get people to pledge a certain amount based on how many laps I run around a 1/16 of a mile track. Don’t worry, I won’t lose my college sports eligibility for taking money for sports performance. No, the school uses this money to invest in our educational tools. This year, it was for technology which is going toward more iPads for the school because (queue the violin) do you know how challenging it is to learn by only using textbooks and workbooks that are….printed?? The other schools in the district tease us and tell us when we think of a good comeback to send them a letter because we can’t access our email at school….sniff, sniff….oh the humanity…..#1stWorldProblems….forget Jerry’s Kids or Sally Struthers (dated references??), host a telethon for our suburban, predominantly upper middle class school. In all seriousness, the goal is a great one – it is to help better our ability to work with technology in a world that continues to make technological jumps at the speed of light and prepares us to be contributors instead of spectators.

Last year, as a kindergartener, I ran 44 laps which works out to be 2-3/4 miles. So since I’m a 1st grader now, there was no way I could do less than last year.  My goal is always to do better than what I have done before – it may not always be the best in the world, but it gets me closer to my best every time. Besides, my fan club doubled in size since last year so there was no way I could put in a sub-kindergarten effort. This year, my grannie and aunt were there to cheer me on in addition to mommy and daddy. So how did I do? 46 laps baby! That’s 2-7/8 miles.

Mommy and daddy said I did awesome and since I enjoy running so much, they want to start running with me regularly to train for a race. Bring it because to paraphrase The Bossbaby I was born to run (again with the dated reference, huh??).

A Star is Born

So I starred in this off-Broadway production of “The Littlest Christmas Tree” last week. Not sure if you heard of it, but it was a one-time performance that got rave reviews from everyone in attendance. It was so good that everyone in the audience hung around afterward to hug at least one person in the production.

I had more fun with this than it looks and more than I thought I would. I’m thinking about making this a once a year thing – you know, to give my fans what they want but not dilute my brand.

Check back for upcoming shows and check out the pictures and videos below to hold you over.

Time Flies

It doesn’t seem like it has been nine months already, but my Kindergarten year is over as of today. At 2:51pm today, I will be a FIRST GRADER!! My folks keep telling me I’m growing up so fast and how they want me to stay little so I actually want them walking me into school and giving me hugs – for some reason they think I will outgrow wanting them to do that – sounds silly to me because I will always want them to do that, right?

Anyway, the last week or so has been very eventful at school. At our last Friday Live, I was recognized as Bear of the Month for exhibiting the core value of PATIENCE. Those who know me will get a chuckle out of that one. Those who don’t, give me awards like these and that’s just one of the reasons this Friday Live was the best ever. I also danced my butt off like I hadn’t before. I guess I’ve grown over the year. Another sign of me growing up more is that I lost my other front tooth. So now I sound a little funny saying a few words with an “S” in them.

I really do need to mention that I know I’ve been very fortunate to be in the school I am with the staff and teachers there. They’ve all been extremely engaged and invested in my success. It was more than my folks and I would have imagined. Thank you to all of them and we will see you August.

What a trip…

…Friday was a day my whole Kindergarten class has been waiting for since we found out about it a month ago – field trip to the Dallas Zoo. We were all so stoked to get out of school for a day and spend it seeing all kinds of animals. For some of us, the day was even better because our parents got to come along as chaperons. I was super lucky because mommy and daddy both got to come along. The only downside was I had to keep listening to my dad say we were going to visit my mommy’s family – he thinks he’s so clever.

My parents were kind of nervous about chaperoning the trip. They weren’t sure how many kids they were going to get or whether the kids were going to be rowdy – the last thing they wanted was to be on the evening news because one of the kids they were watching jumped 12 fences and a moat to pet a lion or something. To their pleasant surprise, for the 18 students in my class, 11 parents volunteered to be chaperons. Even better, my parents were only responsible for 1 kid – me! So it turns out it was more like a take your parents to school and then the zoo kind of day for us which was awesome. Side note: I think it is important to say that having so many chaperons is a great display of how engaged the parents of my class are – kudos to them.

We got to ride a school bus to the zoo. I was so excited because I’d never been on a school bus before – it was kind of cool. I mean, I still expect my parents to drive me to school through college and all, but it wasn’t bad to “rough it” for a day. On the way there, I rode with mommy – keep reading to see whom I rode with on the way home.

When we got to the zoo, we were able to split up in our groups and do our own thing. It seems like everyone headed to the Giants of the Savanna to see the lions, elephants, etc. After eating our lunch and doing our own thing for a while, we ended up in the Chimpanzee Forest and ran into my buddy, Andrew – he wasn’t one of the chimpanzees – oh my, my humor is getting like daddy’s.

Andrew has always been nice to me – he tries to talk to me and play with me, but I’ve always kept to myself. The cool thing about kids my age is that they don’t tend to give up  on trying to talk to you so he is always talking to me. His mommy was his chaperon and they had Micah in his group so we starting sticking with them. I slowly started opening up to them and saying things. The more I spoke and played the more I realized nothing bad was happening so  I did it more. The result was me having a blast with Andrew and Micah. We were acting silly and laughing non-stop. There was one play area in the zoo where we could climb on stuff and jump over little “rivers” and this where I really started opening up. Once we started to play, it was like I had been waiting 8 months to play with some of the kids from school and now was the time to do it so I didn’t want it to end.

Of course, we eventually had to leave the zoo, but we had the bus ride back to be silly so we totally were. I sat next to Andrew and Micah on the way back and I think we did some things that I wasn’t suppose to do like talking real loud and being kind of rowdy, but I think everyone gave me a pass because they were just happy I was opening up.

I was having so much fun that even though I was allowed to leave school when we got back, I elected to stay for the extra hour since Andrew was staying. Hopefully, I continue to play with Andrew for the remainder of the year, but our parents exchanged numbers so we can hang out over the summer and catch up at the beach club – so pretentious. I can’t wait to get Andrew and Greyson together – I’m building my crew.

Note: It is worth saying that the changes/upgrades the Dallas Zoo has implemented have been well worth it from a guest experience perspective. The park is clean and very open which makes viewing more enjoyable. My parents and I were pleasantly surprised about the quality of the zoo and plan on going back soon to see the whle thing.

Perfect Storm

Tuesday was one of those days where excitement, achievement, and fulfillment all came together for one person – me! It all started off first thing in the morning when I got to school. For anyone who knows me, they know I tend to be rather selective with whom I communicate with. While I typically take a “that’s me so deal with it” attitude, I really do want to talk and communicate more than I do – I just get nervous sometimes and that usually wins out. But I’m determined to push through that so I set a goal with my folks that I would wave “hi” to my principal in the morning.

That may not sound like a big deal to a lot of people, but keep in mind for the 4 years I’ve been in some sort of daycare or school system, I’ve never waved or even acknowledged anyone on my way into the building so this would be a big deal if I actually follow through.     Today was the day that I stepped up and looked my nerves in the eye and said not today  – today I will be stronger than any shard of anxiety or fear – today I will take control – today I will reward this kind lady (principal) for her efforts in regularly trying to reach out to me for the past 8 months to no avail. Today, I waved!

While the principal, assistant principal, and daddy all played it off like it was no big deal I get the sense that as I walked down the hall to my class they were all high-fiving, talking about how amazing I was (I have anxiety, not low self-esteem) and how proud they are of me. Truthfully, I was proud of myself and you could tell it in my body language.

That was just the first great part of the day. In PE we played baseball and I was one of the few kids that was able to hit the ball when it was pitched to me opposed to setting it up on a tee. Now I started rounding the bases like I do at home, but we were only suppose to go one base per hit. Kind of embarrassing, but everyone got to see my slugging power and chicks dig the long ball.

The icing on this wonderful day of cake was Magic Mike. He sounds more like something mommy had to pay a cover charge for, but he was actually a magician our school brought in for an after school event. He could make eggs appear out of nowhere and bunnies change colors – all by magic. He was pretty funny too because he juggled a basketball, smelly shoe, and smelly pig – too funny – it had all of us kids rolling.

All in all it was a great day brought on by the perfect storm – magic, baseball, and waving.

I’m going the distance

Friday was our annual Boosterthon Fun Run to raise money for our school so that we can be safer. The goal is to run 35 laps that are 1/16 of a mile long in about 45 minutes. We had to get people to pledge a certain amount of money per lap (or a flat fee). This was obviously the first year for me to run this so I didn’t really know what I could do. My goal was to do my best and outrun everyone.

So the morning comes and it is a near-freezing 37 degrees outside and I’m thinking I will freeze to death before I run 2 laps, but I quickly manned up and said I can do this. Besides, I knew mommy and daddy were going to be there to mark laps on the kids so I knew they would warm me up if I started turning blue. Turns out that after I started running I started to get warm and even thirsty.

So the start of the race is announced and I get my Forest Gump on and run like the wind blows…1 lap down…I got this….4 laps…no sweat…10 laps….no problem….16 laps…starting to get a little tired here….20 laps….real tired here…22 laps….I’m tired, but I will not give up – let’s go….26 laps….30 laps – that was the school’s goal, but I’ve got more to go…32 laps….35 LAPS, but I’m not finished because my goal was to outrun everyone….40 laps….41…42…43 laps and the time is up. 2-1/2 miles later and I didn’t stop, they had to stop me.

I didn’t outrun everyone, but I do know that mommy and daddy didn’t see more than 2 kids with more laps than me from what they were marking so I did outrun most and more than I thought I could so I’m proud of that, but I can still get better…..bring it on Boosterthon 2014!

Big Week

This past week was the first week after Fall Break/Thanksgiving and boy did it hurt. It hurt to go to bed early, but even more so waking up early. It’s not that I’m not a morning person per se – I just don’t like being told to do something and sure don’t want to start my day off that way – “wake up.” Besides the early hours, it was hard not being around my mommy and daddy. During break I got to spend every day and all day with them. I even got to see grannie and nanny.

The week did get better as the week went on. We get stars if we’re good and do what we’re suppose to do at school and once we get the whole sheet of stars we can bring something for show-and-tell. I know what people who know me are probably saying – talking in front of the class wouldn’t motivate me to be good – but you would be surprised because that’s what I kept talking about. At least until the night before show-and-tell when I got super nervous.

So my first priority for show-and-tell was to determine what I was going to bring. I could bring my super cool Hulk Hands, or one of my Batman cars, or an Angry Bird plush toy, or a remote control car….the list goes on. Nope, I decided that I would bring the one thing I thought was the coolest thing I own…..the one constant in my life (for dramatic effect)….the one thing that always makes me smile….Mama Lion. Yep, I brought her! I had to give her a bath first and figure out what I was going to say, but she was going to school with me to be shown and told about and every kid in that class was going to listen.

When the time came the next morning for me to go to school, I was super nervous so I brought the shield mommy and daddy bought for me to take away some of my nervousness – and it worked because I got up in front of the whole class and said loudly and clearly, “This is my lion. I have had her for 6 years. My mommy and daddy gave her to me and I sleep with her every night.”  Yep, while I could have brought a much more macho item so show-and-tell, I went the sensitive route – the road less traveled by young boys like myself – I’m just that secure.

To top off the week, we had Friday Live again. And this time, I DANCED!! Yep, pretty big week for me.

Turkey day at school

We had our Thanksgiving Feast at school the other day. I was very excited about it because daddy was able to come eat with me and we were going to go through the lunch line for the first time. I have always been nervous to go through the line by myself, but this time I was going to be able to show daddy how it was done so I had all the confidence in the world. I even got to pay for daddy’s lunch with my school card – it’s not a black card from Amex just yet, but it gets me by.

The food left a little to be desired, but all in all it was fun and we also got to dress in “clothes” we designed ourselves out of paper bags – although it was Native American garb so I may have been on the wrong end of that deal.
